What Are the Different Types of Medicare?
Original Medicare
Parts A and B together make up what is known as Original Medicare. Medicare Part A is hospital insurance. It typically covers inpatient care in a hospital, nursing home care, home health care, hospice care, and skilled nursing facility care. Medicare Part B is medical insurance. It typically covers services that are deemed medically necessary as well as preventive and screening services.
Medicare Part C
Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is sold by private, Medicare-approved companies. Medicare Part C offers a bundled alternative to Original Medicare, providing full Part A and Part B coverage. Some plans also offer extra coverage such as dental, vision, hearing, or prescription drug coverage.
Medicare Part D
Medicare Part D provides you with prescription drug coverage. Prescription medications can be very cost-prohibitive on their own, so we highly recommend signing up for one of these plans as soon as you become eligible for Medicare. Please note that Medicare Part D is an addition to Original Medicare, not an alternative to Original Medicare.
Medicare Supplements
Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap, are health insurance plans that help fill the gaps in Original Medicare coverage (Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B). Medigap is sold by private insurance companies and can help pay for health care costs like coinsurance, deductibles, and copayments.
